Waverley - The Comings & Goings of the World's Last Seagoing Paddlesteamer : Launched 1946, entered service 1947, sold into preservation for the princely sum of £1 in 1974, substantially rebuilt in two phases during 2000 & 2002 – these are but a few of the key moments during the Paddle Steamer Waverley’s remarkable career which has elevated her from a willing but unremarkable workhorse within the vast fleet of steamers which plied the River Clyde when she took her initial bow to the superstar she most certainly is today.

Since her inaugural cruise under the Waverley Steam Navigation Company (WSN) flag from Glasgow to Arrochar in 1975 to this day she has paddled the coastlines of the UK from her home waters of The Clyde to the Western Isles of Scotland, the Bristol Channel, the Thames – even across the channel to the point in the English Channel where her predecessor was tragically sunk during the Dunkirk evacuations she has brought pleasure to millions and allowed others to relive days that they thought were gone forever.

This path has not always been an easy one and there have been a few times where, if it were not for the dogged determination of the company, crew and the band of ever faithful volunteers she may have not have enjoyed the forementioned career.

Waverley and her consort vessel mv Balmoral who joined the party in 1985 to support the Waverley’s operation, rely very heavily on the dedication of a ever growing band of enthusiastic volunteers - I am proud to say that along with my partner Shelagh - we are part of that band!

This gallery will most probably grow to be my largest - so sit back and enjoy the wanderings of an "Auld Paddler"

ss Norway - Last Clyde Visit 14/09/01 : On Friday 14th September 2001 ocean liner ss Norway (formerly ss France) made her last visit the Clyde berthing a Greenock Ocean Terminal.
Two cruises were given by Clyde Marine Motoring from Victoria Harbour, Greenock to greet and bid farewell to this great vessel - at that time the longest liner in the world at 315m (now only surpassed by Cunard's QM2 at 345m).
She was also unique in still being propelled by Steam Turbine machinery.
The vessel was to be withdrawn by her owners NCL at the end of the 2001 season but due to overwhelming demand she remained in service until May 2003 when a boiler explosion took place whilst alongside in Miami which unfortunately caused the deaths of seven crew.
After this Norway was towed to Bremerhaven, Germany where she languished amidst all sorts of rumours of her re-entry into service, conversion into floating casino etc etc.
In May 2005 Norway left for the Far East under tow where she dodged from port to port before finally arriving off Alang Beach, India. It was at this point her fate was settled. After much debate centering around the 1200 or so tons of toxic asbestos aboard her, she was beached for demolition on Tuesday 15th August 2006.

This gallery is a tribute to the worlds last Steam Transatlantic Liner....
